El certificado médico prenupcial en Antioquia (Colombia), 1933-1936

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Through the requirement of a medical certificate between 1933 and 1936, health authorities in the Colombian Antioquia department sought to regulate the physical and moral conditions of men and women who wanted to marry. The aim of this bureaucratic procedure was to prevent the birth of individuals who may become a burden to the State, and to promote the health and general welfare. Based on reports from physician and municipal health inspectors of the time, this article discusses the way in which this measure was unveiled to the population. It also highlights some of the challenges to enforce it due the disinterest of the Catholic Church, the low presence of physician in areas away from the municipalities, and the lack of infrastructure to carry out the required tests.

RESUMEN: A través de la exigencia de un certificado médico, las autoridades sanitarias en el departamento Antioquia pretendieron regular las condiciones físicas y morales de hombres y mujeres que quisieran contraer matrimonio entre 1933 y 1936. La finalidad era evitar el nacimiento de individuos que se convirtieran en una carga para el Estado e impulsar la salud y el bienestar general. Con base en los informes de los médicos e inspectores de sanidad municipales de la época, este artículo aborda la forma en que se dio a conocer esta medida a la población. Igualmente, resalta algunas de las dificultades que se presentaron para hacerla cumplir debido al desinterés de la Iglesia Católica, la poca presencia de médicos en los sectores alejados de las cabeceras municipales, y la falta de infraestructura para llevar a cabo los exámenes requeridos.
