Explorando la Intersección entre Racismo y Salud Mental : Una Revisión Sistemática de la Literatura

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este estudio sistemático explora la intersección entre el racismo y la salud mental, y su impacto en individuos y comunidades adoptando la metodología de "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA) para una revisión exhaustiva de literatura específica. Los hallazgos revelan un panorama complejo y multifacético, donde el racismo impacta no solo en la salud mental, manifestándose en estrés, ansiedad, depresión y deterioro de la autoestima, sino también en la salud física y el bienestar psicosocial. La presente investigación, además, subraya la importancia de estandarizar métodos para una evaluación adecuada del impacto del racismo. Se examinó inicialmente 813 artículos sobre la intersección entre el racismo y la salud mental. Sin embargo, tras revisar los resúmenes y cotejar con mapas bibliográficos, se seleccionaron cuidadosamente 63 artículos que mejor se alineaban con los objetivos de la investigación y estaban disponibles como archivos de acceso abierto. Un enfoque integral y multidisciplinario es necesario para abordar los efectos perjudiciales del racismo, enfatizando áreas críticas para la investigación futura, incluyendo el impacto a largo plazo del racismo en la estructura cerebral y el funcionamiento cognitivo, el papel del racismo estructural en la salud mental de las comunidades, y la importancia de los factores de protección y estrategias de afrontamiento. Así mismo, se propone la estandarización de instrumentos de medición y un enfoque multidisciplinario que incorpore psicología, sociología, neurociencia, y estudios culturales, para una comprensión holística del racismo y sus múltiples efectos. La investigación enfatiza, además, la urgencia de diseñar intervenciones efectivas y políticas inclusivas, basadas en una comprensión profunda del racismo y sus impactos, para fomentar un entorno más inclusivo y compasivo.

ABSTRACT: This systematic study explores the intersection between racism and mental health, and its impact on individuals and communities by adopting the methodology of "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA) for a comprehensive review of specific literature. Findings reveal a complex and multifaceted landscape, where racism impacts not only mental health, manifesting in stress, anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem, but also physical health and psychosocial well-being. Moreover, this research underscores the importance of standardizing methods for an adequate assessment of the impact of racism. Initially, 813 articles on the intersection between racism and mental health were examined. However, after reviewing abstracts and cross-referencing with bibliographic maps, 63 articles were carefully selected that best aligned with the research objectives and were available as open-access files. An integral and multidisciplinary approach is necessary to address the detrimental effects of racism, emphasizing critical areas for future research, including the long-term impact of racism on brain structure and cognitive functioning, the role of structural racism in community mental health, and the importance of protective factors and coping strategies. Additionally, the standardization of measurement instruments is proposed, along with a multidisciplinary approach incorporating psychology, sociology, neuroscience, and cultural studies, for a holistic understanding of racism and its multiple effects. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the urgency of designing effective interventions and inclusive policies, based on a profound understanding of racism and its impacts, to foster a more inclusive and compassionate environment.
