Resumen : The province of Antioquia, since the second half of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century, has seen how its legal jurisdictions (called municipalities afterwards) were made up by finding new lands from side to side until becoming what we all know nowadays. Neverthless, its setting-up must be revised from the politics of racial segregation imposed by the law to its inhabitants. That process implied population displacement from the ancient city of Antioquia and from other zones to the center of the province, which combined with the socio-economic conditions of the moment, brought about exploration and opening of new territories. Under that premise, the jurisdictions of Barbosa and Santo Domingo, between 1750 and 1820, witnessed the arrival of people from all the social levels searching for refuge and better life conditions. Hence, they settled in farms around Barbosa and mines in Santo Domingo which became meeting points of ongoing paths from the center of the province towards the north and northeast territories and the Magdalena river. In this way, a strategic route was created for the subsequent progress of the provincial economy. The development of this study was mainly based on information extracted from file sources by taking into account the territorial shaping in the civilian and ecclesiastical fields as well as regarding the movements of the population, the economy of the territories, the consolidation of properties and the everyday development in the aplication of governmental policies. All that caused the occupation and the appropiation of the territory. A process particularly differentiated from each of the analyzed sides.
