Lejos del nido : el indígena como el malo (y feo) del melodrama

Abstract

RESUMEN: Lejos del nido es una novela escrita por el colombiano Juan José Botero nacido en Rionegro (Antioquia) y publicada por primera vez en 1924. La propuesta del siguiente artículo es señalar los elementos melodramáticos subyacentes en dicha novela y que básicamente tienen que ver con una caracterización maniquea y peyorativa del indígena: este es retratado como el malo del relato y esta maldad está siempre relacionada con características físicas como la fealdad y tipificaciones degradantes como lo animalesco, lo monstruoso y lo criminal. El interés del melodrama es el de crear una narración simple donde los opuestos estén claramente identificados: así, el blanco es puro y bello y el indígena es malvado y feo. En Lejos del nido, todo ello busca crear una atmósfera donde el narrador desde el mismo inicio tiene la intención de lograr una alianza con el lector por medio de esas imágenes simplistas para definir a un responsable claramente identificable y que se inserta dentro del funcionamiento común del melodrama que es la pérdida de la estabilidad familiar. En este caso la pérdida de la estabilidad familiar de los blancos gracias a las acciones malvadas de los indígenas.

ABSTRATC: Lejos del nido is a novel written by Colombian author Juan Jose Botero born in Rionegro (Antioquia) and first published in 1924. The proposal of this article is to point out the underlying melodramatic elements of that novel and which basically have to do with a pejorative and manichean characterization of the indigenous character: he is portrayed as the bad of the story and his evilness is always related to physical characteristics such as ugliness and portrayed in degrading characterizations in relation to animals, monsters and criminals. The interest of the melodrama is to simply make up a story where opposites are clearly identified: the white is pure and beautiful and the indigeneous character is evil and ugly. In Lejos del nido all of this is intended to create an atmosphere where the narrator from the start wants to achieve an alliance with the reader through these simplistic images to clearly define an identifiable guilty character; all inserted into the common function of the melodrama that is the loss of a family stability. In this case, the loss of the family stability of whites by the evil actions of the indigenous characters.
