Padres y madres frente a los retos de la modernidad

Abstract

RESUMEN: El propósito de este artículo es analizar cómo algunos hombres y mujeres, han roto con los modelos tradicionales de ser padre y madre, dando otros significados al hecho de tener un hijo/a, e incorporando en las relaciones parentofiliales elementos de la modernidad. Mientras los padres incluyen a sus hijos/as en sus proyectos vitales, contrastando la noción de proveedores como fundamento de la paternidad, las madres confrontan la ecuación mediante la cual se iguala mujer y madre, compartiendo la maternidad con otros proyectos vitales. En la primera parte del artículo e enuncian algunos elementos característicos de las tradiciones y en la segunda y tercera parte se da cuenta de las características de los padres y madres que han roto con ellas. Se muestra como unos y otras viven su vida en forma alejada de los estereotipos, no tienen modelos para su desempeño, se enfrentan aún con conflictos y contradicciones a los nuevos retos, asumen nuevas búsquedas, inventos, ensayos y errores.

ABSTRACT: This article’s purpose is to analyze how some men and women have broken with the traditional roles of being mother and father, giving other meanings to the fact of having a son or a daughter and incorporating some modern elements in the parent-child relationship. While fathers include their sons and daughters in their life projects, contrasting the notion of provider as a basis of paternity, mothers confront equation where woman and mother are the equal, sharing maternity with other life projects. In the first part of the article some characteristic elements of traditions are introduced and in the second and third parts characteristics of mothers and fathers who have broken with these traditions are discussed. It shows how some mothers and fathers live their lives in a distant way from the stereotype. They don’t have role models; today, they face conflicts and contradictions with these new challenges. They search for new ways to encounter, try out and make mistakes.
