Comercio y guerra en Medellín. Un estudio de caso a partir de la casa comercial Botero Arango e Hijos, 1876-1877

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este artículo pretende analizar a través de la casa comercial Botero Arango e Hijos el desarrollo del comercio en Medellín durante la Guerra de las Escuelas ocurrida durante 1876 y 1877, una de las nueve guerras civiles acontecidas durante el siglo XIX en Colombia, esta estuvo motivada por asuntos religiosos y educativos, donde se vieron enfrentados el partido liberal y el partido conservador, resultando este último perdedor. Valiéndose de los archivos de correspondencia y contabilidad de la casa comercial, alojada en la Sala Patrimonial de la Biblioteca Luis Echavarría Villegas en la Universidad EAFIT, se extrajeron los datos necesarios para realizar una descripción de los movimientos comerciales, donde se puede encontrar información relacionada con la importación, compra y tipos de mercancías, la lista de clientes, los créditos y otros negocios en los que la casa comercial y su socio principal, José María Botero Arango estuvieron involucrados. En esta investigación, también se utiliza prensa de la época, como El Boletín Oficial y documentos notariales como el testamento de Botero Arango. La información recopilada permitió establecer la relación entre el comercio y la guerra a través de la casa comercial Botero Arango e Hijos, para así evidenciar la forma en que la guerra influyó en la manera en que se desarrolló el comercio en la ciudad de Medellín, a través de la identificación de los movimientos comerciales de la casa Botero Arango e Hijos e identificando también, las redes comerciales y las conexiones que facilitaron el comercio en la ciudad, aún en tiempo de guerra.

ABSTRACT: This article intends to analyze through the commercial house Botero Arango e Hijos the development of commerce in Medellín during the Guerra de las Escuelas which occurred during 1876 and 1877, one of the nine civil wars that took place in the 19th century in Colombia, this was motivated by religious and educational issues, where the Liberal Party and the Conservador Party were confronted, being this last one the loser. Using the correspondence and accounting files of the commercial house, housed in the Patrimonial Room of the Luis Echavarría Villegas Library at the Universidad EAFIT, the necessary data was extracted to make a description of the commercial movements, where you can find information related to the importation, purchase and types of merchandise, the list of clients, the credits and other businesses in which the commercial house and its main associate, José María Botero Arango, were involved. In this research, the press of the time is also used, such as El Boletín Oficial and notarial documents such as Botero Arango’s testament. The information collected made it possible to establish the relationship between trade and war through the Botero Arango e Hijos business house, in order to demonstrate the manner in which the war influenced the way in which trade was developed in the city of Medellín, through the identification of the commercial movements of the Botero Arango e Hijos business house and identifying as well, the commercial networks and connections that facilitated trade in the city, even in wartime.
