Concheros arqueológicos: una revisión a los modos de abordaje, caso del Caribe Colombiano

Abstract

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo revisa la información bibliográfica existente sobre investigaciones arqueológicas desarrolladas en yacimientos tipo conchero en la región Caribe de Colombia. Con el objetivo de hacer un balance sobre los avances en la materia, se describen los métodos y técnicas arqueológicas empleadas por los distintos autores para la comprensión e interpretación de sus sitios de estudio; esto desde las primeras investigaciones, desarrolladas a mediados del siglo XX, hasta las aproximaciones más recientes. Se puede observar que los estudios sobre los concheros tempranos (5000 a.C. – 1000 a.C.) gozan de un volumen de información considerable, caracterizándolos un alto nivel de detalle en las descripciones de los hallazgos, especialmente del material cerámico. Por otro lado, el resto de los estudios presentan características más heterogéneas, sin embardo, se identificaron ciertas tendencias; entre estas se destacan los abordajes más recientes, los cuales presentan mayor especialización, con cierta tendencia a la zooarqueología. Con esta información se plantea una serie de discusiones que apuntan hacia los retos que ha tenido y tiene la arqueología colombiana en relación con los concheros, así mismo, se realizan ciertas recomendaciones para los futuros estudios que se puedan desarrollar en la región con base en los avances globales sobre el tema tratado.

ABSTRACT: This paper reviews the existing bibliographic information on archaeological research on shell middens in the Caribbean region of Colombia. In order to make a balance on the advances in the subject, the archaeological methods and techniques used by the different authors for the understanding and interpretation of their study sites are described; this from the first investigations, developed in the mid-twentieth century, to the most recent approaches. It can be observed that studies on early shell middens (5000 B.C. - 1000 B.C.) have a greater volume of information, characterized by a high level of detail in the descriptions of the findings, especially of the ceramic material. On the other hand, the rest of the studies present more heterogeneous characteristics, however, certain trends were identified; among these, the most recent approaches stand out, which present greater specialization, with a certain tendency towards zooarchaeology. With this information, a series of discussions are presented that point to the challenges that Colombian archaeology has had and still has in relation to shell middens. Finally, certain recommendations are presented for future studies in the region based on the global advances on the subject.
