Producción y contrabando de marihuana desde la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta hacia los Estados Unidos, 1970-1986

Abstract

RESUMEN: La denominada “bonanza marimbera” que se produjo en Colombia en la década de 1970, cuyo territorio primordial de cultivos, producción y comercialización fue la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, su piedemonte y planicies aledañas, ha sido de interés para periodistas, novelistas e historiadores. No obstante, se trata de un tema de muchas dimensiones y aristas que merecen nuevas aproximaciones desde la historia y demás ciencias sociales y humanas. El objetivo de esta tesis consiste en reconstruir los antecedentes, los actores, el proceso de difusión de la semilla de marihuana, recalcando que en su aclimatación y prácticas agronómicas utilizadas se produjo el cannabis de más alta calidad y por ello logró conquistar el mercado de los Estados Unidos, hasta convertirse en un negocio que movilizó más de cien mil millones de dólares durante los tres lustros que duró. La metodología de investigación fue el método crítico de fuentes, tomando como principal fuente primaria la prensa, complementada con informes desclasificados de la Central de Inteligencia Americana (CIA) y fuentes secundarias. Entre sus principales resultados está el análisis de las principales etapas del fenómeno marimbero, el análisis del papel de los traficantes norteamericanos en la dinámica productiva y comercial, de la mula y demás medios de transporte utilizados para llevar el producto hasta las costas y pistas del país del norte. Además, expone cómo las políticas anti-drogas que marcó las relaciones bilaterales entre EE. UU. y Colombia, en especial durante el gobierno de Ronald Reagan hicieron mella en todos los circuitos de transporte y comercialización, produciendo como efecto el desplazamiento de esta actividad económica hacia las montañas del interior.

ABSTRACT: The so-called "marimbera bonanza" that occurred in Colombia in the 1970s, whose primary territory for cultivation, production, and marketing was the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, its foothills, and surrounding plains, has been of interest to journalists, novelists, and historians. However, it is a subject with many dimensions and edges that deserve new approaches from history and other social and human sciences. The objective of this thesis is to reconstruct the background, the actors, the process of diffusion of the marijuana seed, emphasizing that in its acclimatization and agronomic practices used, the highest quality cannabis was produced and for this reason it managed to conquer the market of United States, until it became a business that mobilized more than one hundred billion dollars during the three decades that it lasted. The research methodology was the critical method of sources, taking the press as the main primary source, complemented with declassified reports from the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and secondary sources. Among its main results is the analysis of the main stages of the marimbero phenomenon, the analysis of the role of North American traffickers in the productive and commercial dynamics, of the mule and other means of transport used to take the product to the coasts and tracks of the country. from North. It also exposes how the anti-drug policies that marked the bilateral relations between the US and Colombia, especially during the government of Ronald Reagan, affected all the transport and commercialization circuits, producing as an effect the displacement of this economic activity towards the mountains of the inside.
