El existencialismo en La vida breve de Juan Carlos Onetti

Abstract

RESUMEN: La novela La vida breve, de Juan Carlos Onetti, surgió en pleno auge del existencialismo, que se difundió primero en Francia para luego extenderse a otros países, y es en este contexto donde se inserta el presente artículo cuyo objetivo es determinar en qué sentido esta novela puede definirse como existencialista, en particular analizar la afinidad con las ideas de Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Camus y Sartre sobre la angustia, el absurdo y la otredad. La crítica temática y la hermenéutica fenomenológica se emplean como herramientas analíticas para examinar la estructura existencial del protagonista Juan María Brausen. Se llega a la conclusión de que se pueden demostrar ciertas similitudes entre La vida breve y el pensamiento de los filósofos referidos, lo que hace posible ubicar esta novela en un lugar específico dentro del ideario del existencialismo.

ABSTRACT: The novel A Brief Life, by Juan Carlos Onetti, emerged during the rising of existentialism, which first spread in France and later on to other countries, and it is this context that the current article decided to focus on with the purpose of determining in what sense the stated novel can be defined as existentialist, in particular analyzing the affinity with the ideas of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Camus and Sartre regarding anxiety, absurdity and otherness. Thematic criticism and phenomenological hermeneutics are employed as analytical instruments to examine the existential structure of the protagonist Juan María Brausen. Finally, the conclusion shows that certain similarities can be found between A Brief Life and the thought of the mentioned philosophers, which makes it possible to locate this novel in a specific place within the ideas of existentialism.
