Resumen : This article presents a literature review about uneven development and economic growth theories and uneven spatial development theory, highlighting the connection with the globalization process and changes in the nation-region relationship. It also presents a compilation of research that has been done in this subject on the Colombian case from the economy, economic geography and economic history and, although to a lesser extent, history and geography. The theoretical scenario indicates a transition from analysis where economic space and geographical space are addressed independently, towards analysis that recognizes their intrinsic relations. However, it doesn’t exist yet a theoretical framework that generates strong consensus, while the current globalization disarticulates systematic relationships between the nation and the region. The literature review applied to Colombia indicates the concentration of studies by economists on neoclassical convergence in income during the 1990s and 2000s. Once this tradicional analysis was exhausted, some studies on economic geography, social convergence and economic history will appear. According to these studies, in Colombia regional disparities and polarization of Bogotá with respect to the rest of the country have increased since, at least, 1990. Precisely this persistence of uneven growth and development in the country calls for more research and public discussion on appropriate long-term economic development strategies facing the twenty-first century.
