Resumen : This article presents aspects related to the history, nature and procedures concerning PBL, Problem Based Learning, a teaching method proposed by the School of Medicine of the University of McMaster in Canada. In Colombia the experience was incorporated by the University of Antioquia in its Schools of Health in order to experiment such methodology. The project was followed by a group of professors belonging to the areas of Health and Education from 1992 to 2002. In 2004 the group systematized the experience. The conceptual and methodological elements discussed here stem mainly from this project and its systematization. To start, the article presents some historical aspects of the method, like its relationship with the solving problem method, its birth at McMaster University, at the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies, and its application in several Latin American and Colombian universities. Then PBL is placed within the discovery learning strategy, active pedagogy of common use in modern teaching. The next topic has to do with the role of the “problem” in the PBL methodology, the steps of the method, and four models through which several universities implement it. Next, the attributes of a good tutor are discussed; and finally, several findings concerning research about the effectiveness of PBL are presented.
