“Encumbrado por unos, execrado por otros” : un estudio sobre la recepción de Émile Zola en Colombia, 1880-1911

Abstract

RESUMEN: El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la recepción de Émile Zola en Colombia entre 1880 y 1911, periodo que permite observar, a lo menos, tres distintos momentos de lectura y discusión acerca del escritor francés por parte de los letrados colombianos. Estas consideraciones permitieron estructurar el artículo en tres partes: inicialmente, se analizarán las condiciones de recepción de Zola en Colombia, así como las primeras lecturas y debates suscitados en torno a su obra y figura entre la década de 1880 y 1890; luego, se discutirá la recepción de este intelectual francés a través de la coyuntura específica del caso Dreyfus entre 1898 y 1899; y, finalmente, se estudiará otro momento de lectura y discusión en torno al autor a partir de 1902, año de su muerte, hasta 1911. A manera de hipótesis, este estudio plantea que la inscripción de Zola en el país fue menor que en otros países de la región al estar mediada por el proyecto de la Regeneración y por ocupar un lugar secundario en el cubrimiento de noticias internacionales. No obstante, es posible identificar dos lecturas del escritor en Colombia, las cuales variaron de acuerdo con distintos momentos de recepción, y que tenían que ver con la figura del escritor naturalista y la figura del intelectual.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to study the reception of Émile Zola in Colombia between 1880 and 1911, a period that allows us to identify at least three different moments of reading and discusión of the French writer by Colombian intellectuals. These considerations allowed structuring the paper in three parts, namely: first, the conditions of Zola's reception in Colombia will be analyzed, as well as the first readings and debates about his work and figure between 1880 and 1890; then, the reception of this French intellectual will be discussed through the specific situation of the Dreyfus case between 1898 and 1899; and finally, another moment of his reception will be studied from 1902, the year of his death, until 1911. As a hypothesis, this study suggests that the reception of Zola in Colombia was less than in other countries of the region, as it was mediated by the Regeneration project and had a 3 secondary place in the coverage of international news. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify two readings of the writer in Colombia, which varied according to different moments of reception, and which had to do with the figure of the naturalist writer and the figure of the intellectual.
