ABSTRACT: This work explores the social and linguistic characteristics of memes from an anthropological perspective. The case study of Que Boleta —the largest Colombian meme page— is used to question the assumptions about the memes that exist in the predominantly American bibliography on the subject. It is a qualitative, inductive, and descriptive study, based mostly on primary sources, where social relationships are studied through objects that, in this case, are memes. The sampling process consisted of a systematic collection of all the publications made between March and May 2020 in the Instagram page Que Boleta. The form and content of the memes were analyzed according to the interests of linguistic anthropology and digital anthropology. The work consists, first, of a reconstruction of the history of the term meme and of the phenomenon that currently receives that name in Colombia. Subsequently, the types of publications on the chosen page are identified. Also, the repertoires, communicative intentions, expressive resources, themes, and ways of representing social groups in the memes of the sample are described. Likewise, the dynamics of participation of the followers of the page are addressed. Finally, the conceptualization of the term, the form of the memes, their content, their communicative mechanisms, their uses and the ways in which they allow the participation are discussed. It was concluded that the studied memes are digital objects with a communicative vocation that are very different from those previously reported. This case showed the need and relevance of anthropology’s contextual and comparative perspective for the study of digital phenomena.
