Los albores de la cirugía moderna en Antioquia

Abstract

RESUMEN: Mediante este artículo se analizan algunos de los principales eventos determinantes en el surgimiento de la cirugía moderna en el departamento de Antioquia, Colombia. Se recrea con ejemplos que ilustran los diferentes tipos de intervenciones quirúrgicas realizadas por los médicos de la región a finales del siglo XIX. A partir de ellas, se puede seguir, además, el recorrido sobre el ingreso de la anestesia y la antisepsia en el departamento, en consonancia con lo que estaba ocurriendo en el mundo médico de la época; las resistencias iniciales frente a estas novedades que no se vislumbraban como importantes, para luego reconocer los beneficios de su adecuada implementación. Se resaltan los esfuerzos de estos médicos que, a pesar de las limitaciones, pusieron su intelecto y conocimientos para aprovechar los recursos del medio, así como modificar o innovar sobre diferentes técnicas quirúrgicas.

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes some of the main determining events in the emergence of modern surgery in the department of Antioquia, Colombia. It is recreated with examples that illustrate the different types of surgical interventions performed by doctors in the region at the end of the 19th century. From them, it is possible to follow, in addition, the route on the entry of anesthesia and antisepsis in the department, in line with what was happening in the medical world of the time; the initial resistance to these innovations that were not seen as important, to later recognize the benefits of their proper implementation. The efforts of these doctors are highlighted who, despite the limitations, put their intellect and knowledge to take advantage of the resources of the environment; as well as modify or innovate on different surgical techniques.
