ABSTRACT: Intercritical austenitization in ductile cast irons is mainly studied to obtain irons with multiphasic matrices. This thermal treatment provides a good combination of ultimate tensile strength and ductility, making the alloys suitable for the fabrication of power transmission parts in different industries such as the automotive industry. The mechanical properties of these materials depend highly on the intercritical austenitizing step of the heat treatment, which makes the study of the formation of the austenite paramount for the further development of this kind of alloys. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of the starting microstructure (ferritic or pearlitic matrix) and the characteristics of graphite nodules on the intercritical austenitization of ductile iron alloyed with copper and nickel. The investigation was done in three different steps as follows. First, four alloys with different amounts of copper and nickel were obtained, then a study was made to obtain from the cast material, fully ferritic and fully pearlitic matrices. The results showed that the time and the annealing temperature to have a complete ferritic matrix changes when copper is present within the chemical composition, because this element makes it difficult to dissolve carbides from the pearlite. Similarly, different interlaminar spacings of pearlite could be obtained by varying the holding temperature during normalization, to have proeutectoid ferrite and acicular ferrite free matrices. In the second part of the research, the effect of the starting microstructure, the chemical composition, the interlaminar spacing of the pearlite and the nodule count in the intercritical austenitization in the ductile cast irons for continuous and isothermal heating were determined. For this, high resolution dilatometry was used to study the austenite formation and electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) was used to quantify the microsegregation in the matrix. The results showed: 1) The starting matrix before austenization determines the start of the austenitic transformation in ductile cast iron, 2) the nodule count has no effect on the start and end austenite temperatures for the alloys that were evaluated 3) the chemical composition has an effect at the beginning of the austenitic transformation, but, it has little effect on the intercritical interval, 4) the nodule count has an effect on the microsegregation present in the ductile iron matrix and this microsegregation varies the local start temperature of the austenitic transformation within the matrix. Finally, the effect of the starting matrix and the chemical composition in the martensite start temperature, Ms, and in the low temperature isothermal treatments for obtaining ausferrite (carbon high austenite + bainitic ferrite) was studied when intercritically austenitization is performed. The results indicated that: 1) when starting from the ferritic matrix, the final temperatures of Ms are higher, indicating that the high temperature austenite has less carbon, 2) the bainitic transformation in ductile iron is accelerated by the formation of acicular ferrite, which nucleates at inclusions within the matrix.
