El circo : del festejo por la vida al ritual de la muerte. Prácticas circenses en Medellín, 1955-1972

Abstract

RESUMEN: La investigación expone la historia del circo en Medellín durante la década del sesenta del siglo pasado, “la época dorada del circo en Colombia”. Con el objetivo de instruir al lector sobre la complejidad y la amplitud del tema de estudio, el primer capítulo esclarece procesos históricos que aportaron a la constitución del circo moderno, así como de indagar las rutas de entrada de dichas actividades al continente americano. En este apartado se incluye una contextualización sobre Colombia y Medellín, en función de su nexo con las actividades circenses. El segundo capítulo contiene un análisis más profundo sobre el universo circense. A partir de varias coyunturas históricas a nivel mundial, se procede a definir términos relacionados con el circo. En este apartado se ilustran las características especiales que posee el mismo; como su plasticidad, el carácter festivo y rebelde, su universalidad y sus procesos de apropiación. Todo esto en aras a facilitar el análisis puntual de la historia del circo en Medellín, contenido del tercer capítulo. El último capítulo contiene una contextualización más detallada sobre la ciudad, la cual inicia en la mitad del siglo XX para darle la entrada a la década del sesenta, la temporalidad primordial de la investigación. En éste se exponen algunas de las compañías y personajes que aportaron al circo en Medellín, tanto grandes empresas como cirqueros independientes, obreros, periodistas y políticos. Todos los anteriores permiten hablar de “prácticas circenses” locales, que a su vez, poseen las particularidades circenses que se vislumbraron desde el primer capítulo. Desde esta perspectiva se puede hablar de una universalidad del circo que está mediada por los procesos de apropiación de ideas, técnicas y saberes.

ABSTRACT: The current research is about the Circus’s History in Medellín which took place in the 60´s of the last century, ¨The golden epoch of the circus in Colombia¨. With the aim of guiding the reader about the complexity and breadth of the subject of study, the first chapter is directed to clarify the historical processes that contributed to the constitution of the modern circus, as well as investigate the entrances routes of these activities to the American continent. This section includes also a contextualization about Colombia and Medellín based on their connection with the circus activities. In the second chapter is included a deeper analysis about the circus universe. Based on several worldwide facts, it defines terms related to the circus. In this chapter is illustrated special characteristics that the circus has. Such as its plasticity, its festive and rebellious character, its universality, and its appropriation processes. All of this to facilitate the punctual analysis in Medellin´s circus History, content of the three chapter. The last chapter include a contextualization with more details about the city, which starts in the middle of XX century to give a way for the 60’s, the primary temporality of this research. In this one, there are shown some of the companies and characters that contributed to the Medellin circus, both big companies and independent circu’s artists, workers, journalists and politicians. All the previous ones allow us to talk about local circus practices, which in turn, have the circus peculiarities that were glimpsed from the first chapter. From this perspective, it is possible to talk about a universality of the circus that is mediated by the processes of idea’s appropriation, techniques, and knowledge.
