ABSTRACT: The purpose of inquiring about the nourishing and haematological profile was to describe the average intake of calores and nutrients and the nutritional state of iron in pregnant women in order to find out possible negative risk factors for pregnancy development. A descriptive study of healthy pregnant women 18 to 40 years of age was undertaken, women who attended the Prenatal Control Program of the Empresa Social del Estado, ESE, (Social Security) at the Gilberto Mejía Mejía Hospital in the municipality of Rionegro, Antioquia, between December of 1998 and March of 1999. To define the nourishing profile, a semi-quantitative frequency of foods source of iron, vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin C and calcium was used, as well as a 24 hour reminder; both instruments were applied once a day to the mother. For the haematological profile a 10 ml fasting blood sample was drawn from mothers, and hemoglobine, hematocrite and ferritine tests were made. A peripheral blood exam to identify red blood cells pigmentation was made and a coprologic test was done to highlight the presence of parasites that could cause anemia. una alimentación deficiente durante la gestación tiene implicaciones irreversibles en el desarrollo del individuo y de la sociedad In relation to the feeding profile, it was found that most pregnant women follow a diet which lacked of essential nutrients and that the recommended supplements of ¡ron and folic acid were not consumed as often as indicated. None of the participants showed signs of ane-mia or parasites related with their diagnosis, but 69.6 'Yo had ferropenia and many of them showed changes in the morphology of their red cells. We conclude that if immediate actions aimed al improving the feeding and nutritional status of infants and women are not taken, children from this region will suffer the serious con-sequences of hidden hunger which will in a negative way affect their later personal and social behavior
