ABSTRACT:Introduction: Dengue is the main viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes worldwide, this disease is caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which has four serotypes (DENV 1-4). Aedes aegypti is the most important species with the highest circulation in Colombia. Antioquia is one of the States with the highest case reporting, and its capital Medellín is considered as endemic for the transmission of this vector borne disease, due to environmental, socioeconomic and cultural factors. Objective: To compare the wing size and shape of Ae. aegypti females from neighborhoods with high and low incidence of dengue Medellín, Colombia. Methods: The wing size and shape of Ae. aegypti females mosquito population was compared in neighborhoods with high incidence (La Salle and Trinidad) and low incidence (La Milagrosa and Francisco Antonio Zea) for dengue. Four ovitraps were installed inside each neighborhood and the samples were collected weekly during three months. Ten landmarks were digitized in the right wing of each individual, and the differences in size and shape were evaluated throught geometrics morphometry. Results: We found significant differences in wing size between the neighborhoods using the nonparametric Kruskal Wallis test (p= 0.002). According to the Wilcoxon group comparison test, it was evident that the size of the mosquitoes in the Francisco Antonio Zea neighborhood differs from the size of the mosquitoes from the La Salle neighborhood (p= 0.009) and La Trinidad (p= 0.0007). In contrast, La Milagrosa did not reflect differences with the neighborhoods in comparison. Related with de wings conformation no major differences were observed in the target individuals in the sample. Conclusion: The results showed significant variations in size of Ae. aegypti according to its geographical origin, this diversity in size could be correlated with competence vector, which must be corroborated by other studies.
