Hipólito Taine: la obra de arte como hija de su tiempo

Abstract

RESUMEN: La idea fundamental de Hipólito Taine es tan clara como indiscutible: la comprensión de una obra de arte solo es posible si se relaciona con todos los elementos que configuran su medio físico, artístico y cultural. Sin embargo, Taine la utilizó para formular un esquema casual determinista, basado en las ciencias naturales. A pesar de la gran influencia que ejerció en su propio tiempo, hoy se conocen menos sus ideas que las críticas que se le formulan. Por ello, conviene revisar sus propuestas metodológicas y teóricas que, a pesar de sus limitaciones , son básicas todavía para analizar la obra de arte como "hija de su tiempo"

ABSTRACT: Hyppolite Taine´s main idea is as transparent as it is indisputable: the understanding of a work of art is only possible if it is related to all the elements that configure its physical, artistic and cultural milieu. Nevertheless, Taine used it in order to formulate a deterministic causal scheme based on natural science. Notwithstanding the great influence exerted by him on his own time, his ideas today are less well know than the criticism they have received. For this reason, it is convenient to go over his methodological an theoretical proposals, which, despite their limitations, are still basic in analyzing a work of art as the "child if its time".
