ABSTRACT : The terms biological control and its abbreviated synonym biocontrol have been used in different fields of biology, particularly in entomology and plant pathology. And although there is currently no global definition of biological control, it has recently been proposed: "as the exploitation of living agents, including viruses, to combat pestilential organisms, such as pathogens, pests and weeds, for various purposes to provide human benefits" (Stenberg, 2021). Biological control is an alternative to the great effects on the environment and human health, which currently exist due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides, and as a support for food safety. This paper presents the advances, challenges and opportunities of bio-inputs and in particular biological control in Latin America, with special attention to the Colombian case, evaluating primary and secondary sources around bio-inputs and biological control through the system approach. agribusiness and the new institutional economics analyzing the institutional, organizational and technological environment. It was found that there are difficulties in the articulation of regulatory entities, as well as in the State-Company-University relationship. However, there are opportunities for change that range from national and international guidelines, the global growth trends of bio-inputs, to the use of biodiversity as the main axis to expand research and developments in biological control.
