T : In the search for new processing routes that offer the possibility of achieving a better balance of properties, in the last decade the use of low temperature heat treatments, such as austempering and quenching and partitioning (Q&P) cycle, has gained recognition. Within the family of tool steels, AISI/SAE A2 steel has shown a remarkable improvement in toughness levels when is heat treated by austempering or Q&P, which has favored a significant increase in the working life of parts developed in this material. One of the major problems to understand this improvement lies in the difficulty of achieving an adequate interpretation of the transformation phases. Based on this, in the present work, AISI A2 commercial steel was subjected to austempering and Q&P heat treatments, the reaction product structures were characterized by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, hardness and Vickers microhardness measurements. With the interaction of these techniques and the kinetic knowledge of the transformations under study, in the austempering and Q&P treatments of AISI/SAE A2 commercial steel, it was possible to establish a characterization route, which allows an adequate identification and a better interpretation of the individual or cooperative contribution of each of the transformation product phases.spa
