La investigación social en tiempos de guerra

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este artículo introduce una discusión sobre las visiones catastróficas que acompañan la investigación social en tiempos de guerra. Para ello se propone un cambio de sentido en las preguntas usuales sobre el qué hacer del investigador, esto es, en lugar de interrogarse sobre lo que un medio bélico le hace a los investigadores, sería conveniente preguntarse sobre lo que éstos le hacen a un entorno ya de por sí complejo y turbulento. La pregunta por la manera como los investigadores sociales y sus trabajos están impactando los contextos bélicos, permite superar los lugares comunes frente al tema y plantear algunas reflexiones para el debate, especialmente en dos grandes aspectos: la significación de las palabras en la guerra y los límites de la ciencia, la cultura y la ética en el tema de los conflictos armados. Para ello se asumen los tiempos de la guerra como claro–oscuros y por ello, confusos y equívocos, donde las cosas pierden sus contornos distinguibles y parecen ser otras; lo que se destaca, es que en los tiempos de guerra dejan de ser seguros los viejos mapas conceptuales tan útiles en otros momentos para guiarse en la aventura de investigar; la razón científica muestra de manera muy cruda sus limitaciones y las preguntas éticas dejan de tener respuestas simples y evidentes para plantear verdaderos dilemas. De allí que se plantee como primera obligación ética de los investigadores, su compromiso con el saber y el conocimiento, la revisión crítica de lo dicho y la búsqueda incesante de nuevos mapas cognitivos para acceder de manera más responsable a unas realidades cambiantes y elusivas; la segunda obligación ética de los investigadores sociales tendría que ver con la determinación de los límites, las fronteras y las restricciones que los tiempos de guerra les imponen a sus quehaceres.

ABSTRACT: This article discusses the catastrophic visions which become proper during social investigation in times of war. It proposes changing the sense of the usual questions about what the investigator must do. In order to do so, instead of questioning what war induces in the investigator, it questions what the investigator causes in a complex and turbulent context. The inquiry about the way in which social investigators and their works have an impact in conflictive contexts shall allow surpass common interpretations about this topic and shall permit questioning in two broad aspects: the meaning of the words during war times and the limitations of science, culture and ethics when dealing with armed conflicts. War times are assumed as unclear, confusing and wrong doing; it is a time when things are interpreted in divers manners as if they were different. It must be underlined that during war times, old conceptual maps are no longer safe during the activity of investigation. Scientific reasoning shows its limitations in a very crude manner and ethical questions have no simple answers, creating real dilemmas. Due to this facts, it must be indicated that the first ethical obligation of investigators is their compromise with knowledge, a critical revision of what is said and a continuous search for new cognitive maps that shall permit a responsible access to changing and elusive realities. The second ethical obligation has to do with establishing limitations and frontiers to their every day job.
